Md. Dilwar Hossain

Md. Dilwar Hossain is a respected social worker, educationist and community organiser whose life has been shaped by a deep commitment to education, humanitarian service and the welfare of his community.

He was born on 1 December 1962 into a distinguished Muslim family in the village of Kismat Maijbagh, also known as Golagaon, in the historic Golapganj Upazila of Sylhet District. His father, the late Abdur Rahman, was a government officer, and his mother was Chhaya Khanom, also known as Fuljan Khanom.

Mr Hossain began his primary education at Mansuria Government Primary School. He later completed his secondary education at Atharia Dwipakshik High School and went on to graduate with distinction from the prestigious M. C. College in Sylhet.

In 1986, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue higher education. He subsequently obtained a degree in Information Technology from the City of London College, one of London's well-established educational institutions. In the same year, he married Aleya Begum. Together, they have built a happy and accomplished family and are blessed with two sons and three daughters.

Alongside working for several organisations, Mr Hossain established his own business, Taj Cash and Carry, in East London. While successfully managing his business, he remained deeply committed to the education and personal development of his children. Each of them has received a high standard of education and now holds a senior professional position within their respective organisations.

Having supported his children in establishing successful careers, Mr Hossain increasingly devoted his time and energy to improving the lives of people from his native Golapganj. He became actively involved with a number of charitable, educational, social and cultural organisations in both the United Kingdom and Bangladesh.

In 2016, he served as Vice-President of Golapganj Helping Hands UK. Continuing his work in the field of education, he became Vice-President of the Golapganj Upazila Education Trust UK in 2017 and continues to serve the organisation in that capacity.

Mr Hossain was also one of the founders of the Golapganj Social and Cultural Trust UK and served as its founding Member Secretary. At the organisation's first election in 2022, he was elected General Secretary. In 2024, he was elected President. Under his exemplary leadership and skilful organisational direction, the Trust developed into one of Britain's most distinguished community organisations. In recognition of his achievements and the confidence placed in his leadership, he was re-elected President for a second term for 2026–2028.

His lifelong dedication to educational development has led him to become a donor member and trustee of several prominent organisations. He is a Trustee of Al-Imdad Degree College Trust UK. He is also one of the Trustees of the Greater Sylhet Education Trust UK and currently serves as its Vice-President.

Mr Hossain regards service to humanity as an act of worship. With the aim of helping disadvantaged and vulnerable women become financially independent, he and a group of friends established the T-Five Sewing Training Centre in his home union. The centre provides free sewing and tailoring training to hundreds of women, equipping them with practical skills and opportunities to earn a sustainable livelihood. Mr Hossain is one of the principal directors of T-Five.

He is also one of the founders of the Vision Care Foundation, which organises free eye-care camps in different unions across Golapganj Upazila every year. Through these camps, people suffering from eye-related conditions are able to receive medical examinations, advice and treatment without charge. In addition, he is a Founder Member of the National Heart Foundation Hospital, Sylhet.

Mr Hossain is a Life Member of the Bangladesh Centre London and currently serves as Vice-President of the Jalalabad Association UK.

In 2018, he established the Abdur Rahman Memorial Trust in memory of his late father, with the aim of improving the lives of disadvantaged people in his local community. The Trust has earned an excellent reputation through its wide-ranging humanitarian, educational and welfare activities.

Among its notable initiatives are the distribution of essential food supplies to low-income families at the beginning of Ramadan; the organisation of free circumcision camps for children from disadvantaged families across different unions of Golapganj; assistance with house construction; the distribution of corrugated metal sheets for housing; and financial support for poor and vulnerable families.

The Trust also provides monthly tuition fees for disadvantaged students attending schools and madrasas and distributes books, religious texts and other essential educational materials. Through these initiatives, it continues to offer meaningful and lasting support to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship.

Md. Dilwar Hossain's life reflects an enduring dedication to education, social welfare and community development. His leadership, generosity and humanitarian work have made a significant difference to the lives of countless people, both in Bangladesh and in the United Kingdom.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions as a social worker and educationist, he has received numerous honours and awards from social and community organisations at home and abroad. His work continues to serve as an inspiring example of selfless service, responsible leadership and unwavering commitment to humanity.
